Different Types of Driving License Classes in Singapore: A Complete Guide

Whether you are an individual looking to get behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, or a business owner managing a fleet of used trucks in Singapore, understanding the different driving license classes in Singapore is essential.

The full breakdown: Driving License Classes in Singapore

Class 2, 2A, and 2B - Motorcycles

Class 2B is the most basic motorcycle license you will get once you pass your test.

Class 3, 3A, 3C and 3CA - Cars, Vans, and Light Goods Vehicles

This is the most widely held group of licenses in Singapore, and it's divided into 4 sub-classes.

  • Class 3: The most versatile license - covers both manual and automatic vehicles with an unladen weight of up to 2,500kg, carrying up to 7 passengers. This covers the majority of commercial vans used in Singapore.
  • Class 3A: Automatic transmission vehicle only - same weight limit as Class 3. Ideal for drivers not comfortable with manual gearboxes
  • Class 3C: Introduced in 2015, this is tailored for foreign workers on work permit or S-pass. Holders with an exisiting license only need to pass the Basic Theory Test.
  • Class 3CA: The automatic-only variant of the Class 3C license.

2025 Electric Vehicle Update: From 15 December 2025, Class 3 and 3A holders can legally drive qualifying electrical light goods vehicle (eLGVs) with an unladen weight of up to 3,000kg – 500kg more than the standard ICE vehicle cap.

Class 4 and 4A - Heavy Motor Vehicles

Class 4 is the license class most relevant to operators of heavier vehicles in Singapore:

  • Class 4: For heavy motor vehicles and motor tractors with an unladen weight exceeding 2,500kg - typically 14ft trucks and heavy cargo vehicles.
  • Class 4A: For heavy omnibuses used on public transport scheduled routes where passengers pay individual fares
  • Class 4P / 4AP: Introduced from September 2025, these are the automatic transmission equivalents of Class 4 and 4A respectively, supporting Singapore's transition toward cleaner, automated heavy vehicles.

To qualify for Class 4, drivers must be at least 21 years old, pass an eyesight and color blindness test, and hold a valid Class 3 or 3A license.

Note that from 15 September 2025, Class 3C holders must pass an additional road assessment before enrolling for Class 4.

Class 5 and 5P - Locomotives

Class 5 covers the heaviest category of vehicles, including:

  • Light locomotives (Up to 11,500kg unladen weight)
  • Heavy locomotives (Exceeding 11,500kg)

Class 5P is the automatic transmission equivalent, also introduced as part of the 2025 reforms.

Vocational Licenses: Beyond the Standard Classes

Vocational licenses in addition to the standard license:

  • TDVL (Taxi Driver's Vocational License): For taxi drivers
  • PDVL (Private-hire Driver's Vocational License): For Grab and other ride-hailing operators
  • BDVL (Bus Driver's Vocational License): For public bus drivers

The above vocational license requires one to two years of clean driving experience and must be renewed every three years.
